Divide the 2nd sheet of 4x8 into three equal lengths …..approx 4 x 2ft .8 inches
These are the 3 high sides of the box.
Note:- The hinges on the front “sides” of box should match widths of the two fronts in order to be able to change them as pups grow but still allow the bitch to get in and out to pups.
The hinges on the back of box to attach to sides should be about 4 inches from top and bottom for stability.
You will need 12 brass door hinges with removable pins. Small plastic “blocks to attach floor and sides to keep together. I think they are called corner blocks but not sure. See photo of side attached to floor. You can put screws through them down into floor and horizontally into sides to keep all together. You will get these all in wood/timber merchants.
If you get the place where you get the wood to cut it on one of their machines it makes it even easier. All you have to do is put the hinges on.
See photos above of completed box.
When the box is no longer needed you unscrew the floor of box from the sides, remove pins from hinges (leave wee blocks on the floor part for next time.)
All then is in `Flat pack' ready to store.
How to make the removable board covered in plastic, overwrapped in fleece so that the bitch cannot dig up bedding and lie on pups. The fleece gives the wee pups purchase for their feet to get to their mum to feed.
See below-
Take a piece of 4mm ply wood. (2ft 6"x3ft) is large enough.
Cover with heavy gauge plastic with an overlap of about 4inches. Secure with carpet gripper strip on the underside of the board. (You can staple this on or use tacks and knock down the points that go through the wood.) Make sure the "needles" on the gripper strip are facing towards the centre of the board in order to grip fleece securely.
Cover the plastic covered side with newspaper and a thin fleece or other washable material. A vet bed is too thick for this and will not grip. Turn fleece under board and catch on gripper strip. This will hold the fleece in place and when you put it in box and bitch lies on it it is impossible for her to dig it up or loosen it in any way. Result..a good nights sleep with no worries.
