Things needed to whelp bitch
Hints for whelping a bitch.
Suggested - List and Tips for whelping.
.
When whelping you cannot leave the bitch and go and look for things so it is better to collect them beforehand. Generally about three / four days before the due date is best in case your bitch whelps early which is quite common..
START TAKING THE BITCHES TEMPERATURE FOUR DAYS BEFORE SHE IS DUE. When it drops to 98’ F .or 36.7 C she is about to start.
Whelping Box…This is most important. It should be 4 (four) foot square. The front should be about one foot high so that the bitch can get in and out easily and it will stop any pups that could be sucking on her from being brought out with her. This can be raised as pups get older and can climb out. The other three sides can be 2 (two ) to 3 (three ) foot high.
It is a very good idea to phone your vet when your bitch starts to whelp and let him know in case there are any problems and he is needed.
NEVER CUT CORD WITH SCISSORS or the pup may bleed to death. Always tear it apart towards the puppy with your nails. If you let the bitch eat the afterbirth she will have black sloppy poos for several days. If you remove the afterbirth and put it in bin liner (keep one next to whelp box) then she will be normal. When the bitch eats the afterbirth she crunches it in her teeth to separate it from pup and this crushes the cord and keeps the pup from bleeding from the cord. It is an old wives tale that they have to eat the afterbirth.
Offer you bitch some of her usual food about an hour after whelping. If she is off her food then try scrambled eggs. Give her the food between her front paws. She will not want to leave her pups for a few days. Put her on lead to take her out to relieve herself. Always leave her plenty water and give her two pints of Whelpi a DAY so long as it does not give her the runs. Also four feeds a day are required for bitches feeding pups. Especially when it is a large litter. Sometimes she will want a bland diet and will prefer the dog food with no meat added. Often she will eat it dry.
1 …Hand towels or old nappies are ideal and much better than big towels.
2.. Thermometer for temperature of bitch when due to whelp. …..Temp. will fall to 98 degrees F. or 36 .5 Degrees Centigrade.
3.. Heat lamp and spare bulb.
4.. Clips for umbilical cord or strong thread in case needed. Lakeland bag
clips are quite useful also for this.
5 ***Dropram **** Not really necessary but very useful if any pups need reviving.
6***Oxytocin **** Administered by vet when whelp is over to make sure no afterbirths are retained.
7***Antibiotic **** A good idea to be administered by vet in case afterbirths are retained or in case any infection has entered uterus during whelp.
8 …. Scales….to weigh pups.
9 …. Paper and pencil…Keep record of time water breaks, pups are born, whether dog or Bitch, weight and whether you got the afterbirth. Retained afterbirths can cause infection and nasty discharge afterwards.
10.. Flask of warm water to water down WHELPI and so that it is not COLD when you give it to bitch.. Just luke warm. Give drink of milk after every two or three pups.
11 ...Litre bottle of WHELPI mixed up double strength . Then dilute with warm water to give her a drink when needed. She will not want to eat or drink just before whelping.
12 .. Dog dish for bitches drinking milk when whelping
13 .. Kitchen paper.
14 .. Bin liners….for afterbirths and dirty paper etc.
15 .. Newspaper....a lot
16 **..Colostrum not always needed but if mum has no milk it can be important.
17 **..Vitamin drops ........they come with Colostrum and are very good for weak pups.
18 .. Flask of tea or coffee or something to drink.!! Water or lemonade or something stronger!!. It can be a long whelp and you cannot go off and make cuppa . It is better to have it all in place and them you can be comfortable.
19 ..TV to watch or book to read ... ..It could be a long whelp..
20 ..Comfy seat preferably right in front of whelping box.
21 ..Phone in case of emergency .
22 ..Clock or watch to record time of birth of each pup. Necessary if there are problems as vet will want to know when last pup was born.
23 ..Scissors....not to be used on cord but you may need them to cut thread if tying cord to stop bleeding
24 ..Box for pups... put pups in box while bitch is in the process of having another pup.
25 ..Hot water bottle
26 .. Vet Bed, towel or small bit of blanket to wrap hot water bottle . Put pups on wrapped hot water bottle in small box while next pup is being born so that bitch does not tread on it. Then give it back to bitch after birth of next pup. When pups in small box cover COMPLETLY to keep in heat Cold pups will not feed well.
27 **…Pulsitilla in case bitch does not drop milk.***** not always needed.
28 ..After whelp is over clear out whelp box and cover with clean paper.
29 ..Cover plywood sheet with fleece for bitch to lie on. Gripper strip on back will catch the fleece underneath and keep it from wrinkling and pups cannot get under it so the bitch cannot lie on them. The rest of the box is covered with paper.
Ask the breeder of your bitch or stud dog owner (whoever is most experienced) for advice well before pups are due.
30 ..Baby wipes for hands
31 ..Dettox wipes for whelp box.
32 ..Brandy...this can be given to bitch in milk if she gets very tired after along whelp. You may also like to partake.
33 ..Something to eat. if you get hungry
34 ..Lead to take bitch out to relieve herself between pups or before she whelp as she will try to dig holes under the oil tank, wall, shed, whatever to make a bed for her pups.
35 ..Torch…if she whelps at night and you have to take her to garden to relieve herself then you need to make sure she does not pass a pup
